Chicago Heights program aims to aid new homeowners

 

Chicago Heights aldermen on Monday night approved a program that's designed to lure new homeowners to the city.

Under the program, the city will use $500,000 from its capital projects fund to assist potential homeowners with down payments. An approved applicant would receive $5,000, a military veteran $7,500 and someone buying a home in foreclosure or pre-foreclosure $10,000.

To qualify for the program, applicants must buy homes in Chicago Heights and then live in them for at least five years. If they leave earlier, they would have to repay the city the full amount received.

Anyone selected can only take advantage of the program once. Corporations or businesses are not eligible. The program will end Dec. 31, 2010 or earlier if the available funds run out.

Downsizing Made Easy

Your children have moved on and it's time to take life a bit easier. Moving doesn't have to be a scary thing if you plan ahead and work with good professionals. Look at the upside...Your rent or mortgage payment may go down. You may also cut back on some living expenses such as heating costs, resulting in more cash in your pocket. You'll probably have more free time because you'll have less house to maintain.
 

You may consider opting for the simplicity and amenities of condominium complexes or retirement villages. Keep in mind that both have rules and regulations that some people may find restrictive. (On the plus side, somebody else cuts the lawn and cleans the gutters.) Read the fine print and talk to future neighbors before you sign a contract.
